NOT ALL TRAPS ARE VISIBLE- SOME ARE LAID WITHIN THE MIND

Pediatric Neurosurgery

Bringing Miracles to the Operating Table

As neurosurgeons we are internationally recognized for the diagnosis and treatment of neurosurgical diseases and disorders in children. Our neurosurgeons and neurologists are actively involved in research to improve treatments for epilepsy, brain tumors, and other disorders that affect neurological function in children of all ages, from newborns to young adults

Our expert neurosurgeons and specialist teams to evaluate and treat everything from common diseases to rare diseases. We put patients and families first. Our goal is to give children their best chance to live to their full potential

We give high-quality, attentive, excellent neurosurgery care to children and families. In doing so, we strive to continually advance neurosurgery and pediatric health through clinical care, education, and research

Building a Better Future, Neuron by Neuron

Where Science Meets Miracles
Neurosurgery at Its Finest

Everything we do centers on your child’s needs – from our high level of pediatric expertise to our child-friendly spaces to easing your family’s nerves about neurosurgery, and more. Our Neurosurgery Program diagnoses and treats children with diseases of the brain, spine and nerves. We offer compassionate care for many conditions affecting the nervous system and skull such as blood vessel disorders, conditions present at birth, facial and skull issues, seizures, spasticity, spine conditions and injuries, traumatic injuries and tumors

  • ARACHNOID CYST The most common type of brain cyst, arachnoid cysts are usually congenital, or present at birth. These cysts are called primary arachnoid cysts. Arachnoid cysts that develop later in life are called secondary arachnoid cysts. These are not brain tumors, but are rather benign sacs usually filled with clear cerebrospinal fluid
  • PEDIATRIC BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD TUMORS We work with experts in pediatric neurology, neuro-oncology, neuropathology, endocrinology, radiation oncology, support services and other specialties. This ensures that all your child’s needs are addressed at each phase of care, from diagnosis through rehabilitation
  • CHIARI MALFORMATIONS Chiari malformation is an abnormality in the lower part of the brain called the cerebellum. In normal anatomy, the cerebellar tonsils are located in the skull above the foramen magnum. Normally only the spinal cord passes through the foramen, however in Chiari the lower part of the cerebellum, called the tonsils, extends below the foramen
  • CRANIOSYNOSTOSIS The sutures of a baby’s skull serve as growth plates that allow the skull to grow in response to brain growth. In craniosynostosis, one or more of the sutures close early. The skull then attempts to grow parallel to the fused cranial suture, rather than perpendicular to it, causing an abnormal head shape
  • EPILEPSY IN CHILDREN Epilepsy is a disease of “electrical storms” of the brain, which we call “seizures.” These generally cause sudden episodes of sensory disturbance, convulsions or shaking spells, or loss of consciousness. The neurosurgery team offers children the latest and most advanced options for treating hydrocephalus. Our hydrocephalus surgery program is committed to providing state-of-the-art care to improve the quality of life of our patients. We strive to alleviate worry and suffering and provide outstanding care for children of all ages
  • PITUITARY AND SKULL BASE DISEASE Our neurosurgeons have the option to gain access to the pituitary and skull base through the nostril, known as the endoscopic endonasal transsphenoidal approach. This minimally invasive method offers exceptional visualization, no visible incision and typically a more rapid recovery than open procedures
  • SPASTICITY It is often caused by damage to the part of the brain that is involved in movements under your control. It may also occur from damage to the nerves in the spinal cord
  • SPINA BIFIDA The most common sign of spina bifida is an abnormality along the spine that is noted at birth. The abnormality may be an open defect (myelomeningocele), fatty mass, dimple, hemangioma, hairy patch, asymmetric gluteal fold and/or imperforate anus. Children born with myelomeningocele will usually also have a Chiari malformation type II and hydrocephalus
  • BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD TUMORS Our recognition, combined with an overall mission to care for and support our patients and families, leads to advanced treatment with a personalized touch from our pediatric neuro-oncology team
  • TETHERED SPINAL CORD An abnormal walking pattern, such as walking on the toes. A difference in the size of the right and left legs or feet. New or increased spasticity. Unusual birthmarks or dimples on the back, which may indicate an underlying tethered spinal cord
